Few things are more frustrating than turning on the shower or faucet and only getting a weak trickle of water. Low water pressure isn't just an inconvenience; it can be a sign of underlying plumbing problems that may need attention.

If you're dealing with low water pressure in your home, here are some of the most common causes:

Buildup in Pipes

Over time, minerals, rust, and debris can accumulate inside your pipes. This buildup restricts water flow, resulting in noticeable pressure drops at faucets and showerheads. Homes with older plumbing systems, particularly those featuring steel pipes, are more susceptible to these issues.

Partially Closed Shut-Off Valves

Your home's main water shut-off valve or individual fixture may not be fully open. Even a partially closed valve can reduce water flow throughout the home. Checking these valves is a simple first step before calling a plumber.

Faulty Pressure Regulator

Some homes are equipped with a pressure regulator, a device that controls the water pressure coming from the city supply. If the regulator is a device that controls the water pressure coming from the city supply. If the regulator fails, you may experience sudden pressure drops (or even excessively high pressure, which can damage pipes and appliances).

Leaks in the Plumbing System

A hidden leak in your plumbing system can divert water away from where you need it, causing reduced pressure. Leaks not only waste water but can also cause costly damage to your home if not repaired quickly.

Municipal Water Supply Issues

Sometimes the issue isn't inside your home at all. Your local water supply may be experiencing high demand, maintenance work, or other problems that temporarily reduce the water pressure.

Clogged Fixtures

Mineral Deposits and debris can also build up in faucet aerators and showerheads. This localized issue is easy to fix. All you have to do is unscrew the fixture, clean out the debris, and reinstall it.
